Handbook of European HPC projects

GANANA

EU-India partnership
The GANANA project unites European Union and Indian efforts in scientific High-Performance Computing (HPC). With Europe’s advanced HPC infrastructure and India’s rapidly growing capabilities, this partnership is essential to tackling critical societal issues and driving scientific progress.
GANANA aims to generate meaningful impact across scientific research, societal resilience, and technological innovation. It promotes cost-effective HPC use while helping reduce the economic impact of natural disasters. This EU-India partnership focuses on three domains where HPC is crucial: life-sciences, geophysical hazards, and weather & climate. By advancing research in these areas, the project supports progress in pharmaceuticals, risk prediction, and natural disaster preparedness. It also invests in training the next generation of European and Indian experts, strengthening long-term societal resilience.
The GANANA project establishes a long-term partnership collaboration by uniting European HPC centers of excellence (BioExcelChEESEESiWACE3) and Indian institutions (C-DACIndia Meteorological DepartmentInstitute for Seismological ResearchNIIAIRAWAT) with the objectives to:
  • Strengthen the links between research communities in the priority domains by supporting existing and establishing new collaborative activities.
  • Setup and operate a range of activities in support of expertise exchange, capacity building and sharing of computing resources.
  • Develop selected leading software packages by extending their functionality, optimise HPC performance and scalability, deploy on target architectures, improve usability and data integration.
  • Expand the outreach, broaden the participation of external collaborators and develop a framework for wider community engagement and cooperation.
  • Investigate options for governance and funding models, engage in a policy dialogue with key stakeholders and develop a framework for long-term partnership.
